6 Ways To Feel Good Without Drinking Or Smoking

One of the worst and most destructive problems of our society is that we rely too heavily on consuming substances for happiness.

We rely way too dependently on drugs and alcohol for our thrills.

Instead of pulling our happiness from the fulfillment, excitement, moments, and accomplishments of our lives, a lot of us fall back into this tendency of relying on either drinking or smoking for that sense of pleasure, happiness, and completion that we’re all looking for.

We don’t live in a perfect world. But if we did live in a perfect world, we would all access true happiness from the fulfillment of truly living our lives.

But unfortunately, what we actually do in reality is pull our happiness from escaping from our lives—rather than truly living them to the fullest.

In a society where we all eat fast-food, where you can download any movie or television show at the click of a mouse to your laptop, where everyone is looking to get rich quick, and where five-minute-abs is the preference over disciplined work-ethic, we all want the quick-fix. We want instant gratification.

We would rather instantly tap into a quick temporary feeling of happiness through using the buzz of drinks or drugs to escape our lives than put in the effort, discipline, work-ethic, and consistency of getting fulfillment from the joy of actually living.

Take it from me. Feeling good without drinking or smoking is not easy. It takes effort and work.

But with that being said, the fulfillment, true joy, real happiness, and sense of accomplishment you can and will feel from living rather than escaping is more than worth the effort it takes to get there.

The following are 6 ways to put escaping your life through drugs and alcohol in your past and step into that happy fulfilling lifestyle of truly enjoying your life to the fullest.

6 Ways To Feel Good Without Drinking Or Smoking:

#1- Hit The Gym, Go For A Run, Or Play A Sport

With so many advertisements on television during every commercial break about the great times that alcohol can offer you and so many songs on the radio about turning up or getting wasted, it’s really easy to forget how awesome it feels to simply just walk, jog, run, skip, exercise, and make your body sweat.

As long as they’ve been around, cigarettes, tobacco, marijuana, and alcohol were not always a part of human culture. Drugs and alcohol are both man-made inventions.

Good old-fashioned exercise on the other hand, has been around since the dawn of mankind. Working out is a simple and powerful way for any human being to turn a negative mood into a feeling of pure happiness.

There’s nothing better than going to the gym in a terrible mood—feeling sad, anxious, angry, or depressed—and spending the next thirty or forty minutes physically transforming those negative emotions into positive emotions like joy, peace, confidence, pride, or gratitude.

There’s nothing better than running, jogging, pumping, or sweating until the pain stops.

Exercise is God’s all-natural life-changing self-medication for fighting sadness, anxiety, lack of self-esteem, and depression.

It’s one of the most powerful and reliable ways there is to make yourself feel good with no negative side-effects.

#2- Do Something You Love

What are your passions?

Which activities, hobbies, careers, or crafts do you enjoy taking part in—not for the money—but just for the sake of doing them?

Passions are crafts that we participate in for the sake of doing them—for that feeling of happiness, satisfaction, love, and pure positive emotion that comes over us as we work on them.

Connecting with a true passion can change your life. Because not only will your love for that craft motivate you to work hard, it will also provide you with a consistent source of pure never-ending fulfillment.

Working on stuff that you truly love is a fool-proof way to feel good on a consistent basis without drugs or alcohol.

More often than not, your passion won’t be your nine-to-five. You might love playing chess, cooking, dancing, reading, traveling, shooting hoops, software programming, or blogging.

As long as it’s healthy, it doesn’t matter what your passion is. If you’ve found something that you truly enjoy that makes you feel good, never give up on it. And no matter how hectic your life gets, always make time for it.

Because Doing Something You Love is a powerful way to feel good that doesn’t hurt your health or your bank account.

#3- Meditate

I’ve been practicing meditation for about three full years now. And I’ve been doing Transcendental Mediation twice a day for two years.

And I can honestly say, meditation is one of the best things that ever came into my life.

Because no matter how messed up, depressed, anxious, over-stressed, or angry I’ve felt over the past three years, I’ve always been able to rely on meditation to wipe away my negative emotions and make me feel good—day-in and day-out.

Meditation is a bulletproof way to make yourself feel good without the assistance of drinking or smoking. It works.

It works because the human mind is fundamentally—at its core—a happy and positive place. So no matter how messed up you may be feeling at the time, sitting down for a ten or twenty minute session will always help you phase out of all that negativity and bring you back home to that positive and happy place that is your mind.

#4- Give A Hug, A Gift, Or A Compliment To A Stranger Or Someone You Care About

Giving is a universal principle for not only making the world better, but also for making yourself feel good.

Religions across the world universally teach their followers about the value of giving. Because as Jesus Christ would say: “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

Not only does religion advocate for the benefits of giving, but science too has praised giving as a proven way to boost happiness, mental health, and well-being.

In fact, a 2008 study by the Harvard Business School found that spending money on others actually boosted the participants’ happiness more effectively than spending it on themselves!

Giving has to be the most under-used and under-appreciated happiness-booster in the world.

Because not only is lending that helping hand the right thing to do, it will also make you feel good without drugs and alcohol.

And it can even help you live longer.

#5- Get Your Goals Accomplished

When we think about success, we tend to get caught up in aiming to accomplish our goals for the material and worldly rewards of success—the money, the prestige, the advancement, and the notoriety.

We often forget that the greatest and most valuable reward that you can ever receive for accomplishing your goals is the sense of fulfillment from knowing that you made an impact and that happy feeling of accomplishment from knowing that you came, you saw, and you conquered.

Few things can give you a deeper or more satisfying sense of confidence, higher self-esteem, pride, happiness, and achievement than accomplishing what you set out to do. There’s no better feeling than starting with nothing and hustling through stages, setbacks, obstacles, and defeats to climb your way to the top.

So if you’re looking for a clean and constructive way to Feel Good Without Drinking Or Smoking, try Getting Your Goals Accomplished.

You’ll become more successful. And you’ll feel happier in the process.

#6- Practice Gratitude

No matter how miserable we feel—no matter how stressed, anxious, or depressed we sometimes get—each of us is astronomically lucky to be alive, to have this opportunity to walk the earth, and to have this chance to make a difference in the world.

No matter how bad your situation is—no matter how badly things are falling apart for you right now—you have lots of stuff going for you to be grateful for.

As I explained in a blog post from October 22nd (5 Reasons You Should Write A Gratitude List Everyday), gratitude is a bulletproof practice for generating more happiness, more optimism, more positivity, more healthy relationships, and more success into your life.

Looking for an undeniable way to consistently Feel Good Without Drinking Or Smoking?

Write out a list of between five to ten situations, people, events, circumstances, and opportunities in your life that you feel grateful for.

Not only will practicing gratitude make you feel good, it’s free. It doesn’t hurt your health. It doesn’t hurt your bank account. And it provides you with real, authentic, and pure fulfillment.

Practicing gratitude will give you the appreciation you need to access your happiness from truly enjoying your life, rather than escaping from it through drugs and alcohol.

So if you’re looking for a way out of that addictive, mainstream, and hard-to-escape-from cycle of relying on drinks, cigarettes, or drugs for your happiness, try working out, doing what you love, meditating, giving to others, and practicing gratitude instead.

The fulfillment you’ll get from these 6 Ways To Feel Good Without Drinking Or Smoking will be so authentic that eventually, you’ll forget why you ever gravitated to drugs or alcohol in the first place!
