One of the worst and most destructive problems of our society is that we rely too heavily on consuming substances for happiness.

We rely way too dependently on drugs and alcohol for our thrills.

Instead of pulling our happiness from the fulfillment, excitement, moments, and accomplishments of our lives, a lot of us fall back into this tendency of relying on either drinking or smoking for that sense of pleasure, happiness, and completion that we’re all looking for.

We don’t live in a perfect world. But if we did live in a perfect world, we would all access true happiness from the fulfillment of truly living our lives.

#1- Hit The Gym, Go For A Run, Or Play A Sport

With so many advertisements on television during every commercial break about the great times that alcohol can offer you and so many songs on the radio about turning up or getting wasted, it’s really easy to forget how awesome it feels to simply just walk, jog, run, skip, exercise, and make your body sweat.

As long as they’ve been around, cigarettes, tobacco, marijuana, and alcohol were not always a part of human culture. Drugs and alcohol are both man-made inventions.

Good old-fashioned exercise on the other hand, has been around since the dawn of mankind. Working out is a simple and powerful way for any human being to turn a negative mood into a feeling of pure happiness.

There’s nothing better than going to the gym in a terrible mood—feeling sad, anxious, angry, or depressed—and spending the next thirty or forty minutes physically transforming those negative emotions into positive emotions like joy, peace, confidence, pride, or gratitude.

It works because the human mind is fundamentally—at its core—a happy and positive place. So no matter how messed up you may be feeling at the time, sitting down for a ten or twenty minute session will always help you phase out of all that negativity and bring you back home to that positive and happy place that is your mind.

#4- Give A Hug, A Gift, Or A Compliment To A Stranger Or Someone You Care About

Giving is a universal principle for not only making the world better, but also for making yourself feel good.

Religions across the world universally teach their followers about the value of giving. Because as Jesus Christ would say: “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

Not only does religion advocate for the benefits of giving, but science too has praised giving as a proven way to boost happiness, mental health, and well-being.

In fact, a 2008 study by the Harvard Business School found that spending money on others actually boosted the participants’ happiness more effectively than spending it on themselves!
