So what does it mean to Live Your Life On Purpose? And why is it so important?
Living Your Life On Purpose means doing all of the things you truly want to do, spending your time on the stuff that you love, pursuing the crafts that captivate you the most, developing your talents as far as they can go, and making the impact that you want to leave behind before it’s too late.
It means doing everything—every habit, every action, every job, every career, every relationship, every marriage, every day, every hour, every minute, every second, and every moment of your life—on Purpose. It’s about pursuing the people, pursuits, and places that inspire you the most. Because you recognize that your time is limited.
All of the people that we admire the most in the world—famous or not—are people who are live their lives on Purpose.
Steve Jobs, Oprah Winfrey, Martin Luther King Jr., Thomas Edison, and Michael Jackson all lived and live their lives on Purpose.
And if you’ve been on social media recently, I’m sure you’ve seen the story of the two 53-year-old men—one of them blind and the other a double amputee who lost his arms in a tragic accident—who have worked together as a team to plant over 10,000 trees over 10 years as their contribution to humanity.
Those two heroes don’t have the wealth, fame, power, or glamour of any of the other people I listed. But they too, are living their lives on purpose.
Living Your Life On Purpose isn’t all about fame, glamour, glory, money, or high achievement—although all of that stuff could definitely be a part of your mission. It’s about going ALL IN on the pursuits that truly interest you while you’re still alive and leaving an impact that will be felt after you’re gone.
These are 4 Ways To Live Your Life On Purpose:
#1- Get Clear On What You Want!
What do you want?
Have you ever consciously taken the time to sit down for 10, 20, or 30 minutes or so to think about, envision, and write down everything that you want for yourself?
Do you have a clear idea of exactly what you’re looking to achieve in terms of your life-goals, bucket-list goals, happiness goals, health goals, fitness goals, relationship goals, monetary goals, career goals, and travel goals?
Do you have a clear picture in your mind of what you’re looking to really achieve in your life? Do you have a clear overarching mission, purpose, cause, or a Why that you are marching towards on a daily basis?
Do you know what your Why is?
To Live Your Life With Purpose, the first thing you are going to need to do is Get Clear On What You Want.
To live a truly intentional, purposeful, conscious, and impactful life, you have to get clear on your goals.
#2- Choose A Mission That Serves Something Greater Than Yourself
A false path is something that you pursue purely for superficial, materialistic, or self-serving interests like money, fame, glamour, or recognition.
Any path that your pursue purely for superficial self-serving reasons will ultimately lead you to a roadblock, an obstacle, moments of frustration, and periods of mediocrity in your career that you will not be able to overcome.
Because the pursuit of money, fame, or attention is not a strong enough driver to push you to your fullest potential or inspire the intense work ethic you will need to attain mastery.
In Dan Pink’s bestseller Drive, he lists Purpose as one of the primary motivators that inspires peak performance. He explains that the most deeply motivated people on the planet—are pursuing a cause that is greater than themselves.
The greatest human beings that we can think of—people like Martin Luther King Jr., Mahatma Gandhi, Tupac Shakur, former President Barack Obama—were all on a mission to serve something greater than themselves.
So if you’re going to Live Life On Purpose, make sure that your goals, your work, and pursuits all play a part in serving a bigger cause, mission, and purpose.
Now don’t get me wrong. You don’t have to be Mother Teresa or start a non-profit to live a purpose-driven life. Even you are going to work everyday purely for the money, you can still donate a portion of everything you earn to causes you believe in.
Nothing makes a greater impact than money in this world. So even if the work you do doesn’t directly change the world, you can still put your money to work to serve the greater good.
#3- Go ALL OUT For Your Mission & Make Sacrifices
Okay. So now that you are Clear On What You Want and you’ve dedicated yourself to a Mission that is bigger than yourself, it’s time to Go ALL OUT For Your Mission & Make Sacrifices.
What do I mean by Go ALL OUT?
Going ALL OUT means doing everything within your power—taking action on daily basis—to accomplish those goals and fulfill that Purpose.
We are all busy people. So spending your entire day on your mission to be the best version of yourself, launch a new health product, or impact the world with your speaking, might not be an option for you right now.
But the great thing about progress is, you don’t have to spend all day working on your mission to make progress.
If you don’t have the time, all you need to do is take baby-steps on a daily basis. Write one page of your book each day. Read 20 pages of a book about the area you are pursuing every day. Spend time at the gym everyday. Watch one TED talk about your passion each day. Connect with one new person every week who can move you forward towards your purpose.
And if there are other unnecessary things in your life that you are spending too much time on—like watching television or browsing through social media—don’t be afraid to make the Sacrifices. If you’re spending 4 hours on social media and television every evening, use 2 or 3 of those recreational hours on your Purpose instead.
